Terms of Use
Last updated:
1. What these terms cover
These terms apply to the website nov-ai.de (the “website”) and to the Mac apps Duo, Isle, Isle+ and Iface that are offered on it (the “apps”). Isle+ is Isle with Iface built in; Iface is also available as an app of its own.
nov-ai.de is run by one private individual in Germany, named in the imprint. In these terms, “we”, “us” and “our” mean that person, and “you” means anyone who visits the website or uses an app. By downloading or using an app you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the apps.
2. Free of charge
The website and all apps are free of charge. There is no account, no subscription and nothing to buy inside the apps. If that ever changes, we will say so clearly and early.
3. Beta software, provided as it is
All apps are beta versions. They are still being built, so they may contain errors, may not work on every Mac or with every version of macOS, and features may change or be removed. The website describes the apps as well as we can, but an app may behave differently from what it says.
The apps are not notarized by Apple. They are signed with the developer's own certificate, and macOS asks you to confirm the first launch. You decide whether to open them.
We provide the website and the apps as they are and as available. We may change, pause or stop offering them at any time, and we do not promise support or availability.
4. Your licence
The apps and the website, including their code, design, texts and pictures, are protected by copyright. Unless stated otherwise (see section 10), all rights belong to us.
We give you a free, non-exclusive right to use the apps, which you cannot transfer to anyone else. You may:
- download the apps from nov-ai.de and install them on Macs that you own or are allowed to use;
- use them for personal purposes and for your work.
Without our permission in writing, you may not:
- sell, rent or license the apps, or ask for money for them in any other way;
- pass on copies of the apps that you have changed, or offer changed versions to others;
- remove or change copyright notices, trademark notices or these terms.
Anything the law allows you to do anyway, for example under § 69d and § 69e of the German Copyright Act (UrhG), stays allowed. If you want to share an app, please share the link to nov-ai.de, so others get the current version with its checksum.
5. What you are responsible for
- Keep backups. Back up your Mac regularly, for example with Time Machine, and especially before you install or update beta software.
- Keep your own password. Iface can type your Mac password for you, but it does not replace it. Remember your password and keep it safe: you still need it whenever unlocking with your face does not work or is switched off.
- Iface is a comfort, not a security feature. It is not as secure as Face ID or Touch ID. A normal camera cannot measure depth: the blink check, which is on unless you switch it off, stops a printed photo, but a video of you could pass. Do not rely on Iface to keep anyone out of your Mac. Only switch on unlocking with your face if that risk is acceptable for you and for the data on your Mac, and on a work Mac, check your employer's rules first. Only set up Iface with your own face.
- Duo moves the picture of your screen. If moving pictures or motion on a screen make you feel unwell, for example dizzy or sick, do not use Duo's effect. You can switch it off at any time with one click in the menu bar.
- Use the apps lawfully. Use them only on Macs you are allowed to change, and only in ways the law allows.
6. Permissions the apps ask for, and why
macOS asks you before an app may use certain parts of your Mac. The apps only ask for what a feature needs:
- Duo: Screen Recording
- To take one picture of your screen when the lid starts moving. The picture stays in memory and is thrown away when it snaps back. On macOS 15 and later this permission is called Screen & System Audio Recording.
- Isle: Automation
- Only if you allow it: to ask Music or Spotify directly what is playing, and to play, pause or skip when you use the island's buttons, through Apple Events.
- Iface: Camera
- To see your face while you set up or test Iface, and for a few seconds at a time at the lock screen once your face is saved. The privacy policy says exactly when.
- Iface: Accessibility
- Only when unlocking with your face is switched on: to click the lock screen once so its password field appears, and to type your saved Mac password into that field.
Iface asks for the same permissions whether you use it on its own or inside Isle+. Plain Isle does not use the camera. You can take back any permission at any time in System Settings, under Privacy & Security; the feature that needs it then stops working. What the apps do with your data is explained in the privacy policy.
7. Updates
The apps never update on their own. They only look for a new version when you click Check for updates: the app then asks nov-ai.de for a small file that names the current version, and it only downloads the update when you click install. Before installing, the app checks the download against the SHA-256 checksum named in that file and against the developer's signature, and only installs it if both match. It then moves the old version to the Trash and opens the new one.
Duo and Isle show the address they ask in their settings. Leave it as it is: if you change it, the app asks the address you entered instead of nov-ai.de.
We are not obliged to provide updates, fixes or new versions. An older version may stop working after a macOS update.
8. Warranty
Because the website and the apps are free, we give no warranty and no guarantee beyond what the law requires. Under German law this means in particular that we are responsible for defects we knowingly concealed from you. We do not promise that the apps are free of errors, that they work without interruption or that they suit a particular purpose.
9. Liability
We are liable without limit
- for damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence;
- for injury to life, body or health, whatever the degree of fault;
- under the German Product Liability Act (Produkthaftungsgesetz);
- where we knowingly concealed a defect.
Apart from that, we are not liable for slight negligence, because we give you the website and the apps for free. This is the standard German law sets for things given free of charge (§ 521 and § 599 of the German Civil Code, BGB). Where German law still makes us liable for slight negligence, for example because we breached a duty that is essential for using the apps safely, we are liable only for the damage that is typical for such a case and could be foreseen.
These rules also apply to the liability of anyone who helps us provide the website and the apps.
10. Trademarks and third-party software
Apple, Mac, MacBook, macOS, Face ID, Touch ID and AirPods are trademarks of Apple Inc. Spotify is a trademark of Spotify AB. Duo, Isle, Isle+ and Iface are independent apps; they are not made or endorsed by Apple or Spotify.

11. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms, for example when an app gets a new feature or the law changes. The date at the top shows when they last changed. A new version applies to downloads and updates from the day it is published here, never to the past. For a copy you already have, the terms you agreed to when you downloaded it stay in force.
12. Applicable law
These terms are governed by the law of the Federal Republic of Germany, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). If you are a consumer and live in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live.
If a part of these terms is invalid, the rest stays valid.
13. Who runs this
nov-ai.de and its apps are made by Tim, in Germany. See the imprint.
